As the weary and dull winter sun began to fade on the horizon, and the swirling snow on the ground began to collect into bigger clumps, a rogue wolf walked through it alone. The wolf’s fur contrasted the white snow very much, for it was a deep, dark ebony coloration and her small paws sunk deeply in some patches. Her navy blue eyes were focused ahead, as she made her way through the lands at a relatively normal pace in this weather. The wolf had no intended destination; rather she was just brought here through happenstance. Her family was left behind, and there was no turning back now. Delilah, as the wolf was called, was all on her own now. Her pups were even gone now. When she once felt a kick here or there, there was nothing anymore. She buried their small little forms in a quiet grove a while back and she couldn’t bear to stay there. That was a little too much to handle. The rest she could take, but that was pushing it to her limit.
‘Oh my babies forgive your mother if we see each other again,’ she’d told them.‘Do not let your hearts be hardened against me.’
Delilah padded into the lands moving smoothly through them without worry now though; she had no regrets about her actions and never would. That mongrel deserved to die as he did after what he’d done to her. The look in his eyes didn’t even bother her as she slowly drained the life out of him with that vine. He took a piece of her, but she would have all of him. He wouldn’t live to see another day. The she-wolf was obviously the stronger one, for she would not have been there today. Delilah sniffed the ground lightly, picking up the scent markers outlining the boundaries of the territory. Afterword, she committed them to memory, but didn’t abide by them. She was not going to stand and wait at someone’s border. That could, and most definitely would, take an eternity. So Delilah meandered across the borders, and went in search of the land’s inhabitants. The she-wolf was ready for confrontation, because there always was confrontation. Wolves that got all territorial usually approached her, chest puffed out, ear perked and tail raised. They thought that it intimidated her for some reason. She had KILLED a wolf dead only around two weeks ago. Pffttt. Like that was going to scare her. Delilah seemed to be desensitized to fear and death. Her own tooth and claw were responsible for a ruthless male losing his life. That whole instinct of danger seemed to have dissipated into thin air. Being that it was drawing nearer and nearer to night time, Delilah did want a place to rest her paws though. She knew that the best chance to find rest and solace for the night would probably be towards the center of territory.
The she-wolf moved down one of the hills, stumbling slightly once but keeping her paws beneath her somehow. Delilah surveyed the lands, and what she saw intrigued her. Down further, it seemed like there was really no snow let in. The trees and other things made a blockade of sorts. Delilah didn’t hesitate to move towards them, and taking refuge beneath one. For a moment the she-wolf closed her eyes and just breathed a little bit to get her bearings. She folded her cold paws beneath her and laid her head down slowly. At this point, she didn’t care if someone were to find her. She’d found what she wanted, and that was that. At least she wouldn’t be frozen solid tomorrow, and would live to see another day. Not that that matter either. Delilah had given it her all and she was tired.
It wasn’t long before the canine’s breath became even and she rested soundly. In a different world, when she was younger and more thoughtful, she would’ve been watching her back and taking note of everything. But right now the dark female wanted to sleep and sleep only. Her cares and thoughts drifted into dreamland. That was the only place a murder could find peace in a time such as this one sometimes, though not always. Night terrors even got to her when she let them. But not today, Delilah merely snoozed calmly in the solace and shelter of the trees.
